There was an excellent intellectual discussion on the topic "Is There A God?" on the BBC yesterday - it's called "Beyond Belief" and is available on "listen again" for the next few days.

"Remember that Copernicus, Galileo, Mendel (genetics), and Lemaitre (colleague of Einstein and the father of modern big bang theory) were Catholic and never gave any sign of wanting to leave the Church. Mendel and Lemaitre were even priests."

No. What you do have to remember is that you could be imprisoned, beaten, or maybe killed for being a heretic. Galileo was treated pretty badly if I remember my history. You had to mold your findings into a christian mind set or they would FUCKING KILL YOU!!! Religion is an old thought from an old and outdated world. It was a a step in the evolution of the human mind...and it failed. Let it go.
